Portuguese Man O’ War Sightings Prompt Beach Warnings
The appearance of Portuguese man o’ war has forced the raising of yellow warning flags for hazardous marine life at three beaches in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The city council’s Operational Coordination Centre (Cecopal) has recommended that the public exercise extreme caution.
Authorities Issue Stern Safety Advice
“Do not touch them, not even if they appear dead, as they can still cause stings,” warned the centre. The beaches where this potentially dangerous species has been spotted are Valleseco, Las Gaviotas, and Playa Chica.
Cecopal has also advised beachgoers to follow the instructions of security and lifeguard personnel at all times. “Avoid bathing if you see specimens in the water or on the shore,” they stated.
