Canary Islands Airports Welcome Over 4.5 Million Passengers in February
The airports of the Canary Islands handled a total of 4,546,710 passengers in February 2026, representing a 1.2% increase compared to the same month in 2025. Of this total, 4,528,534 passengers travelled on commercial flights. Domestic flights carried 1,545,064 passengers, showing a slight decrease of 0.1% from February 2025. In contrast, international flights saw 2,983,470 passengers, a significant rise of 2.1% year-on-year.
Furthermore, February saw 38,779 aircraft movements (a 0.1% increase) and the transport of 2,648 tonnes of cargo, which was up 3.5% on the previous year.
Island-by-Island Passenger Breakdown
Gran Canaria Airport remained the busiest in the archipelago, welcoming 1,354,603 passengers—a 1.6% increase. It was followed by Tenerife South Airport with 1,258,924 passengers (+1.1%) and César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport with 709,321 passengers (+0.5%).
The figures for the other islands were: Fuerteventura with 547,745 passengers (-2%); Tenerife North-Ciudad de La Laguna Airport with 517,621 passengers (+3.1%); La Palma with 127,557 passengers (+7.7%); El Hierro with 22,747 passengers (+3.8%); and La Gomera with 8,192 passengers (-1.9%).
Strong Start to the Year for the Archipelago
Across the first two months of 2026, Canary Islands airports registered 9,139,022 passengers, a 0.6% increase from the same period in 2025. Of the 9,101,290 commercial passengers, 3,128,239 were on domestic flights (-1.1%) and 5,973,051 were on international flights, representing a 2% rise. The period also saw 79,209 aircraft movements and 5,267 tonnes of cargo handled.
Wider Aena Group Performance
The wider Aena Group, which manages 46 airports and two heliports in Spain, London Luton Airport, and 17 airports in Brazil, handled 25,434,678 passengers in February 2026. This was a 3.7% increase compared to February 2025. Aircraft movements, however, fell by 1.9% to 218,751, while cargo surged by 7.3% to 119,929 tonnes.
For the January-February period, the Aena Group managed a total of 51,264,837 passengers (a 3.5% growth), 439,945 aircraft movements (a 1.3% decrease), and 235,805 tonnes of cargo (a 7.2% increase).
Spanish Network Boosted by Rail Disruption
Aena’s airports in Spain alone registered 20,555,745 passengers in February 2026, a 2.8% year-on-year increase. This growth was slower than the 4% rise seen between February 2025 and 2024, which was partly due to a leap year effect.
The group noted that approximately 0.5% of the passenger increase (around 108,000 people) was attributable to greater use of its network following a railway accident on 18 January. This particularly affected routes between Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport and the airports of Málaga-Costa del Sol, Seville, and Barcelona-El Prat, due to problems on the high-speed rail line.
In Spain, February also saw 175,332 aircraft movements (a 1.9% decrease) and 108,238 tonnes of cargo handled, which was a sharp 9.1% increase on February 2025.
