What do solid white lines mean?
The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has one overriding objective: to guarantee road safety and cut the number of accidents on Spanish roads. To achieve this, it uses a range of road signs and markings that all drivers are obliged to respect. Solid white lines on the road are not painted there by chance. They are there to tell drivers they must not invade the oncoming lane or carry out certain manoeuvres, because they tend to mark stretches where visibility is reduced or where overtaking would be unsafe.
Driving on a solid white line – or crossing it when it is not permitted – can lead to serious penalties for those who break the rules.
The cyclist exception
One of the most common situations occurs when a driver is travelling behind cyclists. The regulations allow drivers to occupy part or all of the oncoming lane in order to overtake them, even if there is a solid white line, provided the manoeuvre can be carried out safely and with the obligatory minimum lateral distance. This exception also applies when overtaking mopeds, pedestrians, animals and horse-drawn vehicles, provided the manoeuvre does not put any other road user at risk.
In addition, crossing a solid white line is permitted when it is necessary to get around an obstacle on the road or to pass a stationary vehicle, as long as the driver has first checked that there is no risk of causing an accident.
When can’t you cross the line?
While the regulations set out a series of exceptions and allow drivers to overtake certain road users on a solid white line, they also make clear when it cannot be crossed. The rules do not permit overtaking a tractor by crossing into the opposite lane when there is a solid white line – and the same goes for cars and motorcycles.
Spain’s motoring organisation RACE warns: “Bear in mind that, because it is a large vehicle, you will cover more metres and therefore take longer to complete the overtaking manoeuvre compared with a car. Avoid overtaking a tractor if visibility towards the horizon is poor.”
Fines and the bottom line
Crossing a solid white line is prohibited in the majority of cases, and drivers who breach the rules face a fine of €200. However, the General Road Traffic Regulations do contemplate certain exceptional situations in which it is allowed, provided the driver takes extra care. The purpose of solid white lines is to prevent manoeuvres on stretches where the risk of an accident is higher. In the exceptional cases where crossing is permitted, drivers must have sufficient visibility, make sure no vehicles are coming in the opposite direction, and carry out the manoeuvre without endangering other road users.
