Two tonnes of fruit intercepted at Santa Cruz de Tenerife port
Officers from the Civil Guard’s Fiscal and Border Section at the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, working alongside Customs officials from the Tax Agency, have seized two tonnes of tropical fruit originating from third countries whose import is not authorised. The operation took place as part of their fiscal guard and border control duties.
Inspections of commercial vessels led to the discovery
The action was carried out during an inspection operation set up on the arrival of various commercial vessels. During the checks, officers spotted two vans whose cargo raised suspicions about its origin and nature, prompting a more thorough inspection, according to the Civil Guard.
After examining the merchandise and checking the relevant documentation, officers seized two tonnes of tropical fruit from third countries – including bananas, avocados and pineapples – whose import is prohibited in the archipelago.
Protecting Canary Islands agriculture from pests
The operation forms part of plant health protection measures in the Canary Islands aimed at preventing the entry of pests, insects, fungi and external viruses, while safeguarding the local agricultural sector against unfair competition and negative economic impact.
The events concluded with the confiscation of the goods and the processing of sanctioning files for alleged breaches of the Plant Health Law, in line with Canary Islands plant health regulations.
