The Canary Islands Parliament has unanimously approved a motion calling on the Spanish government to resolve technical obstacles preventing foreign family members of Spanish citizens from accessing the resident travel discount. The motion demands urgent updates to verification systems and clarifies that these relatives are entitled to the same discount as other residents.

House sales in Spain fell for the fourth consecutive month in April 2026, down 1.8% year-on-year to 53,241 transactions. However, the Canary Islands bucked the national trend with a 2.9% increase in sales, despite a shortage of available properties.

The Canary Islands government has returned to capital markets after five years with a €500m sustainable bond issuance. Demand reached over €2bn, quadrupling the offer, with 66% of buyers coming from international investors led by the UK and Ireland. The funds will finance projects delivering both environmental and social benefits.
