Travel Disruption as Winds Divert Flights
The strong winds recorded across Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura on Thursday forced the diversion of up to eight flights across the Canary Islands’ airports, with most redirected to Tenerife South. According to sources from the airport authority Aena, five diversions had been necessary at Fuerteventura Airport by 2:00 PM. These included a flight from Tenerife North and another from Gran Canaria, both of which had to turn back.
Multiple Diversions to Tenerife
Furthermore, three aircraft that took off from Seville, Madrid and Warsaw respectively were all diverted to Tenerife South Airport. Over at Gran Canaria, a flight originating from Gothenburg and bound for the island was ultimately forced to land in Tenerife South. The disruption also affected Lanzarote, where two flights departing from London Stansted and Dublin were similarly diverted to Tenerife South.
Weather Warnings Extended
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has extended its weather warnings for the Canaries until Saturday. It has escalated the risk to orange for Lanzarote due to very rough seas, while the rest of the islands remain under yellow warnings for the same reason. Additional yellow warnings for strong winds are in place across the entire archipelago.
