Fatal accident in the Barranco de Bujame
A 48-year-old man has died this Sunday following a serious accident while canyoning in the Barranco de Bujame, located in the Teno massif in the Tenerife municipality of Buenavista del Norte.
Emergency response mobilised
The incident triggered a large-scale emergency response after the Coordinating Centre for Emergencies and Security (CECOES) 1-1-2 received an alert at 12:45 reporting that a group of canyoners needed medical assistance in a very difficult-to-access area.
Upon receiving the alert, 1-1-2 immediately activated several emergency resources, including a helicopter from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES), personnel from the Tenerife Fire Service, the Civil Guard, and medical staff from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC).
Rescue efforts and victim evacuation
Rescuers from the GES and firefighters descended from the helicopter to the location where the victim was found. According to information provided by emergency services, the man had suffered a head injury and was in cardiorespiratory arrest. Rescue teams began basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene of the accident. However, their efforts proved unsuccessful due to the severity of his injuries, which were deemed incompatible with life.
While the aerial operation was underway, another group of firefighters and Civil Guard officers accessed the area to coordinate post-mortem procedures and authorise the removal of the body. The victim was evacuated by air to the helipad at La Guancha.
Remaining group members unharmed
At the same time, emergency services completed the evacuation of the remaining three members of the group from the ravine, none of whom sustained any injuries.
