Emergency landing at Tenerife Sur as passenger collapses

Medical emergency forces priority landing

A commercial flight operating the route between Seville and Tenerife South Airport had to activate the onboard medical emergency protocol on Thursday. The crew formally notified the control tower that one of the passengers was suffering from serious health complications, having lost consciousness, and requested maximum priority to land.

Direct approach authorised

Given the severity of the situation, air traffic controllers assigned a direct approach to the aircraft to minimise remaining flight time. The manoeuvre forced a temporary change in the normal operation of the airport, authorising the landing on the runway opposite to the one active at the time (runway 25), thereby achieving much faster access to the terminal.

Emergency services at the ready

In parallel with the aircraft’s approach manoeuvres in Canarian airspace, Tenerife South Airport services urgently coordinated the deployment of medical assistance on the ground at the runway side, ready to intervene immediately after the aircraft came to a stop.

Acknowledgements from air traffic control

Air traffic control teams have issued a public message thanking the other crews flying in the area at the time for their cooperation and flexibility, as their flight paths had to be adapted to give way to the emergency. They have also wished the affected passenger a swift and full recovery.
