Rain pre-alert lifted across the islands
The Canary Islands’ Directorate-General for Emergencies ended the rain pre-alert in La Graciosa, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Tenerife on Sunday after atmospheric conditions improved.
The decision, which came into force at 12:00 on Saturday, was taken on the basis of information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and other available sources, and in application of the Canary Islands’ Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).
Downpours from Friday afternoon
The rain pre-alert had been in force since three o’clock on Friday afternoon owing to a spell of rainfall that threatened heavy showers in the eastern islands and in parts of the northern slopes of the mountainous islands.
Indeed, on Saturday more than 20 litres per square metre were recorded over the course of the day in the Fuerteventura municipality of Tuineje, and more than 17 in Teror (Gran Canaria), reaching 13.2 in Valleseco, also on Gran Canaria, according to data collected by Aemet.
As for Friday, up to 12 litres per square metre were recorded in San Cristóbal de La Laguna (Tenerife) and almost 10 in La Victoria de Acentejo, also on that island.
