Child, 4, dies in hotel pool tragedy in Lanzarote
A four-year-old girl has died after being rescued from a hotel swimming pool in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, with signs of drowning, the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordinating Centre (CECOES) 112 has confirmed.
The incident occurred at around 1.30pm on Saturday, when an emergency call reported that a young girl had been pulled from the water and required urgent medical assistance.
Emergency response
While ambulances from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) were en route, a coordinating nurse on duty in the control room assessed the situation over the phone and determined that the child was in cardiorespiratory arrest. The nurse then provided the lifeguard with instructions over the phone to begin immediate resuscitation efforts.
When SUC ambulance crews arrived at the hotel, medical staff continued with advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but ultimately they were unable to reverse the arrest and had to confirm the child’s death.
Scene secured for helicopter
Meanwhile, personnel from the Lanzarote Security, Emergencies, Rescue, Prevention and Fire Extinction Consortium, along with local police officers, secured a nearby area to allow for the landing and subsequent take-off of a medical helicopter that had been activated.
Investigation under way
Officers from the Civil Guard have taken charge of the investigation and will prepare the relevant official reports.
