Thursday: strong winds, calima and a warm Atlantic
A familiar summer pattern grips the Canary Islands this Thursday. The trade winds are picking up noticeably while a light haze of Saharan dust (calima) hangs over the eastern islands. Temperatures are climbing a notch or two, and a few spots could see local records challenged.
General outlook
Skies are mostly clear across the archipelago, though the mountainous northern coasts will see more variable cloud cover, especially in the morning. A strong trade wind flow is established, blowing hardest along the southeast and northwest coasts of the larger islands. On the Atlantic, a combined swell from the northeast is pushing waves above 1.5 metres off northern-facing shores.
Temperatures are rising slightly across the board. Coastal areas hover in the mid-to-late 20s, while inland valleys and south-facing slopes will get much warmer. A few spots on Gran Canaria could push 37°C by the afternoon.
Island by island
Tenerife
Mostly clear skies, with cloudier intervals breaking up around midday on the north coast. The calima is visible higher up. Temperatures could top 30°C in the south and the capital. Trade winds are moderate to strong in exposed spots.
Gran Canaria
A moderate easterly wind, much stronger in the southeast and northwest where gusts could be very strong. Skies are clear and calima is present. This is the hot spot of the day: inland valleys in the south and west could reach a sweltering 37°C.
Lanzarote
Cloudy intervals in the north and west. Calima sits overhead. The trade wind is moderate, picking up intensity over the southern interior. Expect a gentle day in the capital: lows of 22°C and highs of 28°C.
Fuerteventura
Largely clear, aside from some cloud patches in the west. Calima is present but light. Winds are moderate, with stronger gusts in southern Jandía. The warmest pocket is the southeast, where the mercury will climb over 30°C. The capital sits between 21°C and 28°C.
La Palma
Cloudy spells along the north and east coasts are expected to clear around midday. The west of the island could see 30°C. In Santa Cruz de La Palma, the high will hover around 27°C.
La Gomera
A warm day with highs possibly reaching 32°C in the southern midlands. The capital stays more temperate: between 23°C and 28°C.
El Hierro
Light calima in the upper air. The trade wind is moderate, with stronger breezes on the southeast and northwest coasts. It feels like a proper summer day across the island.
La Graciosa
Cloudy intervals with a thin layer of calima above. Moderate trade winds keep things fresh. Temperatures in Caleta de Sebo range from 22°C to 27°C.
What to watch for
The strong wind gusts on Gran Canaria could catch drivers on exposed roads off guard. The calima, while light, might reduce visibility slightly on the eastern islands. UV levels remain high — don’t skip the sunscreen, even under hazy skies.
