Record one-tonne shrimp giveaway at Bajamar festival
Never before have so many kilos of shrimp been handed out at a single event in the Canary Islands. The village of Bajamar, on the coast of La Laguna, will offer a full tonne of this quintessentially Canarian seafood during a marine gastronomy festival on Saturday 11 July 2026.
The third edition of Cañas & Camarones has cemented itself as one of the flagship summer events on the Laguna coast, drawing thousands of people to celebrate a product that is central to the identity of this seaside enclave. The thousand kilos of shrimp will yield approximately 10,000 tapas, ensuring nobody misses out on the pleasure of sharing a small portion with a cold beer.
Event origins and growth
Cañas & Camarones was created to mark the 60th anniversary of Bajamar being declared a Tourist Interest Destination, and in just three editions it has become a firm favourite among locals and visitors alike. It is a prime example of how an event can bring together tourism, gastronomy, local commerce and the fishing sector to generate economic activity and showcase the full potential of the coast.
The line-up will run from 12:00 to 21:00 on Saturday 11 July around the Bajamar seawater pools, combining a wide gastronomic offering, six live musical performances, a market featuring thirteen local brands, and participation from restaurants specialising in seafood cuisine. The aim is to continue boosting the local economy and promoting one of the most emblematic spots on the Laguna coastline.
Date change for peak shrimp season
This year’s edition has moved from September to July, a decision taken to align the gastronomic and cultural festival with the peak shrimp-catching season, thereby guaranteeing the highest quality of the star product. Fran Hernández, Councillor for Public Services, explained that the event is also an invitation to discover Bajamar from a different perspective, enjoying its landscape, its culinary offering and the work of the many people who make this celebration possible and ensure it continues to grow year after year.
What to expect on the day
Make a note in your diary for Saturday 11 July and head to Bajamar. You can enjoy as many shrimp tapas as you like, washed down with a cold beer to beat the summer heat. A full tonne of seafood has been purchased specifically for the occasion, guaranteeing plenty for everyone.
Creative director of Marcha Go, Estefanía Lima, presented the main features of this third edition on Monday 6 July. She said the event retains its core identity while incorporating improvements to the programme and the overall visitor experience. Lima added that this year’s event will include new food outlets, a local market featuring thirteen brands from different sectors, and a music programme running throughout the day, cementing a format designed to enjoy summer by the sea.
Tourism and local economy benefits
Dimple Melwani, Chief Executive of the Tourism board of Tenerife, said: “Bajamar has exceptional natural and landscape heritage, and events like this help enrich the experience of those who visit us, while creating opportunities for local shops, restaurants and producers.” She noted that this connection between tourism and the local economy is fundamental to advancing towards an increasingly sustainable and competitive model. “Cañas & Camarones reflects that commitment to a model that benefits the territory, boosts the local economy and strengthens the identity of our municipalities.”
Esteban Reyes, Director General of Fisheries for the Canary Islands Government, emphasised the importance of locally caught seafood. “The shrimp is much more than a gastronomic product; it is part of the identity of our coastline and the daily work of those who make a living from fishing. Initiatives like Cañas & Camarones help bring that heritage closer to the public, support the fishing sector and highlight a top-quality product linked to our shores.”
