Foreign demand powers Canary Islands property market

The interest of international buyers in purchasing a property in the Canary Islands is consolidating as one of the key drivers of the real estate sector. According to the latest data published by the Idealista portal, foreign demand for home purchases reaches 26.5% in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (which encompasses the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro) and stands at 20.3% in the province of Las Palmas.

At a national level, the Tenerife province holds fourth place in Spain for international interest (26.5%), only surpassed by Alicante (32.3%), the Balearic Islands (28.2%) and Málaga (27.1%). This confirms that the Mediterranean coastline and the island regions concentrate virtually all foreign buyer activity.

German buyers lead the market

The property portal’s analysis reveals the origins of demand by province, as well as the most attractive hotspots in the region. In the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the market is led by German buyers, followed in search volume by Italians and Britons. The province of Las Palmas also maintains German leadership in demand, though in this case Britons take second place, followed by Italians.

Tijarafe tops municipal rankings

In the municipal breakdown for the Canary Islands as a whole, the small municipality of Tijarafe on the island of La Palma takes first place regionally, with 55.1% of property searches coming from abroad. It is followed in the rankings by the tourist towns of Pájara (Fuerteventura) with 52.6%, Mogán (Gran Canaria) with 47.4% and Antigua (Fuerteventura) with 46.5%.
