Tenerife becomes the backdrop for a new Netflix thriller

Tenerife has once again become the setting for a Netflix production. The platform has begun filming El susurro del fuego (The Whisper of Fire), a four-part miniseries based on the novel of the same name by Javier Castillo, published in 2025. The thriller, starring Inma Cuesta and Alejandro García, will be shot in various locations across Tenerife and Madrid.

The production adapts a story in which the island’s landscapes play a fundamental role. The original book sets its plot in Tenerife and takes in some of its most recognisable locations, with the Teide National Park serving as one of the central settings for the investigation.

A body in the Teide National Park

The story begins with the discovery of the body of Laura, a young astrophysicist, in the Teide National Park. Her death triggers an investigation to establish what happened and what secrets she was hiding. Her twin brother, Mario, has spent a year battling cancer when he is confronted with Laura’s disappearance. From that moment on, he embarks on his own search for answers, while Civil Guard sergeant Candela Oramas investigates the case on her own initiative.

The miniseries will combine police mystery with family conflict and the contrast between science and faith. The answers to the first questions will open up new ones about the young woman’s life and the circumstances of her death.

Cast and creative team

The main cast of El susurro del fuego comprises Inma Cuesta, Alejandro García, Iván Pellicer, Zoe Bonafonte and Alicia Armenteros. They are joined by Guillermo Bedward, Nico Romero and Jaime Zataraín, among other performers. Direction is in the hands of Laura Alvea and José Ortuño, while the script is written by Jesús Mesas Silva and Javier Andrés Roig. The production is being handled by Atípica Producciones.

With this project, Netflix adds another adaptation of Javier Castillo’s novels to its previous screen versions of La chica de nieve (The Snow Girl), El juego del alma (The Soul Game) and El cuco de cristal (The Crystal Cuckoo).

The island locations featured in the novel

The island was already the star of the novel published by Javier Castillo in 2025. The writer chose Tenerife as the setting for this suspense story, in which the natural environment and island landscapes accompany the development of the plot. Among the places that appear in the book’s pages are the Teide National Park, the cliffs of Los Gigantes, the Sendero de los Sentidos, La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz and the Astronomical Observatory.
