Night-time resurfacing on the TF-5
Work is under way on the North motorway (TF-5) as part of the construction of a third lane, and also on the South motorway (TF-1). The island institution announced on Wednesday that resurfacing work between Güímar and Santa Cruz will begin on the night of Sunday into Monday. The works will take six months to complete and were awarded for a sum of just over 13.8 million euros.
According to details provided by the president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, at the end of the weekly Governing Council session, the works cover 18.6 kilometres through the capital and the municipalities of El Rosario, Candelaria and Arafo, in both directions, and will be carried out under two separate lots. The initial plan is for resurfacing to take place between 22:00 and 06:00 and to cause traffic disruption. Each direction will be reduced to a single lane, Dávila specified. Changes to traffic flows will be communicated subsequently as the works programme progresses.
Safety improvements and new signage
The works include renewing the pavement as well as various improvements aimed at driving conditions and road safety. Among the tasks planned are the installation of rumble strips along the edges of the carriageway, repainting of the motorway and its slip roads using thermoplastic paint, and the installation of new information signage, such as flag signs, louvres and gantries. The projects also include improvements to the central reservation fencing and, in the case of the first lot, additional resurfacing work on link roads.
The two lots in detail
The first lot covers rehabilitation of the road surface between kilometre points 1+400 and 9+900, in the municipalities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and El Rosario, a length of 8.5 kilometres. The work was awarded to Transformaciones y Servicios Sociedad Limitada for 7.5 million euros. The second lot covers the stretch between kilometre points 9+900 and 20+000, a length of 10.1 kilometres, through El Rosario, Candelaria and Arafo. In this case, the winning company is Señalizaciones Villar Sociedad Anónima, for 6.3 million euros.
Revamp of the Aguaide viewpoint in Anaga
The Governing Council also approved the commissioning of works to remodel the Aguaide viewpoint and its surroundings, in Chinamada, within the Anaga Rural Park. The project has a budget of 502,145 euros and an execution period of eight months. It envisages four interventions: improving the viewpoint, adapting the new Garcíarramos trail, work at the Roque de Los Pinos viewpoint and upgrading the fencing around the caves on the hillside.
Drainage, rural paths and a new care centre
On municipal infrastructure, the Cabildo awarded drainage works at La Bastona, in Santa Úrsula, for 1.6 million euros with a 16-month execution period. These works are in addition to the future rehabilitation of the La Canaria rural path, in La Guancha, under the AgroCaminos programme. Another relevant northern initiative reported by Rosa Dávila is the tender for the new Santísima Trinidad sociosanitary centre, in La Orotava, for 16.5 million euros. Once awarded, the work is expected to take 20 months. The facility will serve around 20 people in day places and 99 in residential care.
Funding for religious heritage
The Governing Council agreed to grant 2.5 million euros to the Diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna for the conservation and restoration of historical and religious heritage during 2026. The grants will allow work on three churches, ten movable assets and two historic pipe organs. Most of the funding goes to the churches of San Antonio de Padua, in Granadilla; Santo Domingo, in La Orotava; and San Juan Bautista, in San Juan de la Rambla. Altarpieces, images and other artistic elements will also be restored in Santa Cruz, La Laguna, Taganana, Garachico and Icod de los Vinos, as well as two historic organs located in the Tenerife capital. Among the pieces to be improved are the Corpus floats of La Laguna Cathedral.
Marine research partnership with the CSIC
The Governing Council also gave the green light to collaboration between the Cabildo and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), through the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, to promote applied marine research. The agreement will mobilise 2.4 million euros, of which two million will be provided by the island corporation and 400,000 euros by the scientific body, which will also provide facilities, equipment and specialist staff.
