Night works on the TF-1 to start on Sunday

Resurfacing works on Tenerife’s TF-1 south motorway will begin at 10pm on Sunday along an 18.6-kilometre stretch in both directions and will run for six months, the island’s Cabildo announced on Wednesday. The contracts have been awarded for a total of €13,855,850 and will affect traffic on the south motorway as it passes through the municipalities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, El Rosario, Candelaria and Arafo, with the work split into two separate lots.

How the two contracts break down

The first lot covers resurfacing between kilometre points 1+400 and 9+900, in the municipalities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and El Rosario, a length of 8.5 kilometres, and has been awarded to Transformaciones y Servicios for €7,507,192. The second lot covers the stretch between kilometre points 9+900 and 20+000, a length of 10.1 kilometres, as it passes through El Rosario, Candelaria and Arafo. In this case, the contractor is Señalizaciones Villar, for €6,348,657.

Overnight schedule to limit disruption

The start of the works will affect traffic on the night of Sunday 25 to Monday 26 October, coinciding with the beginning of the resurfacing. Carrying out the work at night is intended to reduce interference with the busiest traffic periods on the south motorway, and the work will specifically be done from Sunday to Thursday between 10pm and 6am.

The president of the Cabildo has advised drivers on the TF-1 to pay attention to temporary works signage, reduce their speed on the affected stretches and follow the instructions of staff responsible for directing traffic. Specific traffic disruptions will be announced as the works programme progresses.

Follows earlier resurfacing between Arico, Fasnia and Güímar

She added that this work continues the resurfacing carried out on the south motorway between the municipalities of Arico, Fasnia and Güímar, which covered approximately 24 kilometres of road and involved an investment of €30 million. The asphalt work on that stretch finished on 30 October 2025 and included renewal of the pavement as well as complementary improvements to signage and road safety features. The project also incorporated sustainability criteria through the use of asphalt mixes containing up to 50% recycled material recovered from previous pavements.

42.6 kilometres and almost €44 million in total

With the new work between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Arafo, the two interventions together total 42.6 kilometres of motorway, with a combined investment of approximately €43.86 million. Of this amount, €30 million corresponds to the work already completed between Arico, Fasnia and Güímar, while the remaining €13.86 million corresponds to the newly awarded works. The forecast is that by the end of the current term of office, the Cabildo will have worked on approximately 44 kilometres of the TF-1 through the various resurfacing projects carried out on the south motorway.

Safety improvements and recycled materials

The work also includes rehabilitation of the motorway pavement and various improvements to traffic flow and road safety. Among the tasks are the installation of rumble strips along the edges of the carriageway, repainting of the motorway and its junctions with thermoplastic paint and the installation of new information signage, such as banner signs, louvred panels and gantries. The projects also include improvements to the central reservation fencing and, in the case of the first lot, additional asphalt work on link roads.

One of the aspects covered by both contracts is the incorporation of environmental criteria through the use of hot bituminous mixes with 50% recycled RAP material, recovered from old asphalt pavements. This measure allows materials to be reused in carrying out the works and reduces the need to use new raw materials. The contracts also provide for a three-year guarantee period on the work carried out. The works are linked to the construction project for the BUS-VAO lane managed by intelligent transport systems (ITS) between kilometre points 1+400 and 20+000 of the TF-1 motorway.
