All islands under yellow warnings
The whole of the Canary Islands is under a yellow warning for heavy rain this Wednesday, while on Thursday the alerts will be raised to orange in several parts of the archipelago. Whereas on Tuesday the Spanish state meteorological agency (Aemet) had issued warnings for only two islands (El Hierro and La Palma), this Wednesday the entire archipelago is braced for intense rainfall, with yellow warnings active across all the islands.
Following Aemet’s latest update, the warnings will extend into Thursday on five islands, where they have also been upgraded to orange.
Timings of today’s yellow warnings
This Wednesday, the yellow warnings for heavy rain last in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura until 6pm, and on the remaining islands until 11.59pm, except in Tenerife, where they run until 6am on Thursday. They cover every island in full, meaning both the summits and the eastern and western slopes, as well as inland areas.
According to Aemet, accumulated rainfall of around 15 litres per square metre is expected within an hour, with heavy showers that may be accompanied by thunderstorms.
Orange alerts on Thursday
On Thursday, El Hierro, La Gomera and the eastern slope of La Palma will be under an orange warning until 6pm because of heavy rain. Accumulated rainfall of 30 litres per square metre is expected within an hour, with heavy showers that may be accompanied by thunderstorms. In the case of La Palma, the rain could leave up to 100 litres per square metre in 12 hours.
On the western slope and the summits of La Palma, the warning is yellow until 6pm, with accumulated rainfall of 15 litres per square metre expected within an hour and heavy showers that may be accompanied by thunderstorms. In Tenerife, the warning will be yellow until 6am.
