Anaga coast trembles again

After yesterday afternoon’s scare, the Anaga coast has trembled once more. Up to six aftershocks have been recorded, following on from a series of four strong earthquakes – the most intense measuring magnitude 3.6 – which occurred yesterday afternoon to the north of Punta Hidalgo.

No link to volcanic activity

None of these new tremors were felt by the public, and the National Geographic Institute (IGN) has ruled out any connection with Tenerife’s seismic-volcanic activity. The latest movements began at around 10.30pm and subsided by roughly 2am. All were detected at depths of more than 30 kilometres, and most had magnitudes below two, although the first of this new sequence registered 2.4 mbLg.

“What we are seeing appears consistent with aftershocks from the initial earthquakes,” says Itahiza Domínguez, director of the IGN in the Canary Islands. The scientist stresses that, given the considerable depth at which they occurred, it is difficult to determine precisely why they happened, though he rules out any link to the seismic-volcanic activity that has been recorded on the island of Tenerife since 2016.
