Seismic activity spike on Tenerife
The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has reported a significant uptick in seismic and volcanic activity on the island of Tenerife, registered between 22 and 23 July. The episode has been notable for a continuous low-frequency signal that began on Tuesday evening, followed by the appearance, from 22:00 UTC, of a swarm of repetitive but low-magnitude seismic events. This is the tenth such swarm since February, and it remains active.
More than 550 events detected
During this period, automated systems have detected more than 550 events, of which 95 earthquakes have so far been manually located. The epicentres lie predominantly to the west of Teide National Park, covering the municipal districts of Guía de Isora, Vilaflor de Chasna and Santiago del Teide, at depths of between 10 and 15 kilometres below sea level.
Mixed event types observed
Analysis of the data has revealed a combination of volcano-tectonic, hybrid and low-frequency (LP) events. These latter types, along with the hybrid events, are consistent with the circulation of fluids at depth — a common behaviour in active volcanic systems which, experts stress, does not in itself imply an acceleration of any eruptive process. The repetitive events analysed belong to a single seismic family and have presented clearly defined P and S phases, characterised throughout by their low amplitude.
No cause for alarm, say experts
The IGN has issued a message of reassurance to the public, confirming that none of the tremors have been felt by residents and that the situation does not increase the risk of a volcanic eruption in the short or medium term on the island. This behaviour is similar to the upticks recorded in February, March and June.
Monitoring network and coordination
The monitoring network includes more than 100 stations, instruments and sampling points measuring seismicity, ground deformation and geochemistry in real time. The IGN maintains continuous communication with the relevant civil protection authorities. Magnitudes and the final event count remain provisional pending detailed analysis of the official catalogue.
