Lidl reopens Agüimes store after €6.5m investment
Lidl is strengthening its presence in the Canary Islands with the reopening of its store in Agüimes, following an investment of nearly €6.5 million in a complete overhaul. The work brings the premises in line with the chain’s updated brand image and introduces new accessibility measures and energy efficiency features.
The store, which began operating at full capacity yesterday, covers 1,405 square metres and offers 98 parking spaces. It features higher shelving, a redesigned layout of the gondola displays, and a fresh modern look intended to provide a more comfortable, attractive shopping experience. A total of 28 staff now work at the branch, following the creation of six new jobs.
Growth across the islands
Lidl first launched in the Canary Islands in 2010 and now has a network of 39 stores across the archipelago, along with two logistics platforms – one in Agüimes (Gran Canaria) and another in Güímar (Tenerife). The supermarket chain has become a key contributor to the local economy, generating nearly 5,000 direct and indirect jobs in the islands and contributing €251 million to the regional GDP.
Solar panels and electric charging points
In line with its sustainability strategy, Lidl has introduced several energy-saving measures at the Agüimes store, located at the Cruce de Arinaga (Calle del Torno, 1). These include the installation of 238 square metres of solar panels, which cover 54% of the site’s energy consumption, along with three electric vehicle charging points.
“The reopening of our Agüimes store with a modernised design reflects Lidl’s commitment to the Canary Islands and to continuing to offer our customers an increasingly convenient, modern and efficient shopping experience,” said Carlos Martínez, Lidl’s regional director in the Canary Islands. “This renovation allows us to better meet their needs, while strengthening our commitment to local employment and Canarian products.”
Economic impact and local sourcing
Lidl has established itself as a major wealth generator in the Canary Islands, where its activities account for 2.53% of the company’s total employment in Spain and around 7.2% of its direct national workforce. Its economic footprint is also significant in terms of GDP: in 2024, its contribution in the province of Las Palmas was around €115.9 million (0.41%), while in Santa Cruz de Tenerife it reached €136 million (0.53% of the provincial GDP).
This sustained growth is largely underpinned by the company’s commitment to local produce and its collaboration with Canarian suppliers. Lidl works with nearly a hundred producers across the archipelago and buys around €119 million worth of local goods each year, particularly fruit and vegetables such as tomatoes, potatoes, bananas, avocados and oranges, thereby helping to strengthen the islands’ agri-food sector.
In addition, the company is making notable progress in internationalisation: exports of Canarian products have now reached €1 million, allowing products made in the archipelago to be sold in Lidl stores on the Spanish mainland and in other European markets. This development reinforces the chain’s role as a bridge between local producers and international consumers, while helping to raise the profile and recognition of Canarian goods abroad.
Expansion strategy continues
Against this backdrop, the renovation of the Agüimes store strengthens Lidl’s expansion strategy in the region, through which it plans to continue creating jobs, modernising and growing its store network, and increasing purchases from local producers.
