Tenerife opens second free motorhome service point in Arona

New free motorhome service area opens in Arona

The Cabildo of Tenerife has brought into operation a new free area for motorhomes at the clean point in Arona. This is the second such facility to enter service in the municipality, following the recent opening of a space at the Malpaso Logistics Centre. The initiative, driven by the Department of Natural Environment, Sustainability, Safety and Emergencies, is specifically designed to make it easier for motorhome users to empty black and grey water tanks, as well as to access a supply of drinking water. The site also includes electrical hook-ups to support vehicle maintenance.

Response to long-standing demand

The Cabildo’s aim is to respond to a long-standing demand from motorhome associations, with whom the island corporation has worked to define the necessary services and identify authorised locations to concentrate this type of operation. The measure is intended to prevent waste from being discharged in an uncontrolled manner in unauthorised areas, many of which are located in zones of high environmental value. The new installation forms part of a broader strategy by the island’s Waste Department to progressively adapt the network of clean points to the growth of the motorhome sector in Tenerife.

The Cabildo considers that this type of small-scale action improves waste management, reinforces sustainability and offers an organised solution to an activity that has gained a significant presence on the island in recent years. The corporation plans to extend this model to the rest of Tenerife’s clean points.

Two sites already operational; Jagua next

The first two spaces are already operational in Arona, and the next step will be the clean point at Jagua, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Island officials recently visited the site alongside motorhome groups to plan the needs of the future area. In all cases, the Cabildo’s approach is to create specific zones for the evacuation of black and grey water, as well as points for supplying drinking water. The intention is that the service will remain free of charge as it is incorporated into new infrastructure across the island network.

Councillor: ‘Another milestone for public services’

The Councillor for Natural Environment, Sustainability, Safety and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, highlighted that the opening of the service area at the Arona clean point represents “another milestone for the island in terms of special publicly-owned services”, as it is the second space specifically set up for the free evacuation, cleaning and refuelling of motorhomes. Pérez stressed that with this measure, the Cabildo reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and to protecting areas of greatest environmental value, by offering regulated alternatives to prevent the dumping of tanks in unauthorised locations.

Official: ‘Designed for safe, controlled disposal’

For his part, the Island Director of Waste, Alejandro Molowny, explained that the installation has been designed so that users can discharge black and grey water “at an authorised point in a safe and controlled manner”. He added that, in addition to tank emptying, the site has water and electricity hook-ups to facilitate complete motorhome maintenance. Molowny noted that the technical department intends for the two points already operational in Arona to serve as a model for the rest of the island network. He also confirmed that the Cabildo expects to progressively incorporate these services into other clean points across Tenerife, while maintaining the free-of-charge policy.

Opening hours

The Arona clean point and the one integrated into the municipality’s Logistics Centre are open on Mondays from 8.00 to 16.00; Tuesday to Friday, from 8.00 to 20.00; Saturdays, from 9.00 to 20.00; and Sundays, from 9.00 to 14.00.
