Tenerife heat alert: temperatures set to hit 34°C

Tenerife heat forecast: a very warm Wednesday ahead

Tenerife is preparing for a Wednesday marked by heat, light calima dust in the upper atmosphere, and temperatures once again surpassing 30°C across much of the island. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) expects generally clear skies, aside from some patchy morning cloud in lower areas of the north and fresh cloud forming after nightfall below 300-500 metres. The forecast points to a very warm day, though without significant changes from previous days.

Widespread highs and the hottest spots

Temperatures across Tenerife will widely reach or exceed 30-32°C, except along the northern coastline, where values will be milder due to the influence of the trade winds and low cloud. The worst of the heat will be concentrated in the western, southern and eastern midlands, where thermometers could hit 34°C, with localised peaks of 37°C not ruled out. Aemet also does not rule out the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, approaching these figures, although the official forecast places the minimum and maximum at 23°C and 32°C respectively.

Warm nights and cooler northern coast

Beyond the daytime heat, the forecast warns of elevated overnight temperatures in the worst-affected areas. In the western, southern and eastern midlands of Tenerife, thermometers could remain around 25°C during the night. The north-facing midlands are also expected to see high values, with daytime temperatures of 30-33°C and local peaks of 34°C. However, below 300-500 metres, particularly in areas near the northern coastline, conditions will be noticeably cooler.

Wind and calima: light dust in the air

Winds will be from a northerly direction across Tenerife. On the summits, winds will be light to moderate from the west, with stronger gusts at the higher elevations of Mount Teide. Coastal breezes will predominate along the northern and western shores. The calima will be light and remain at altitude, so it may slightly dull the sky without, in principle, causing an intense episode at ground level.

Hotter still in Gran Canaria and the eastern islands

Although Tenerife will have a hot day, the most intense episode is expected in Gran Canaria, where Aemet forecasts highs of 37°C in the basins of Tejeda and Tirajana, with local readings exceeding 40°C possible. On that island, night-time temperatures in the worst-affected areas will barely drop below 26-28°C. In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, maximum temperatures could reach 37°C in inland areas of the south and east. Across the rest of both islands, highs will widely surpass 30-33°C, except along the northern and western coastlines.

La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma also affected

On La Gomera and El Hierro, south-facing midlands and higher areas could reach 34°C, with localised peaks of 37°C. On La Palma, the heat is most likely on the summits and midlands, particularly in El Paso, where temperatures will hit or exceed 34°C.

Health advice and precautions

In light of this situation, it is advisable to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the central hours of the day, drink water frequently, and pay special attention to older people, children, pregnant women, outdoor workers, and those with chronic health conditions. It is also recommended to ventilate homes during the coolest hours, reduce intense physical activity during the afternoon, and take extra care in midland and summit areas, where the heat can be more intense than at some coastal spots.
