Tuesday: a quiet start to autumn

Tuesday, 1 September marks the start of meteorological autumn, but the Islands are not making much of a fuss about it. Expect another day of sunshine, some northern cloud banks and temperatures well above 30°C in most areas.

The forecast shows no major changes in the short term; the most noticeable shift could wait until the weekend. Low cloud will gather over the north of the more mountainous islands, over La Graciosa, and across the north and west of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. It will be most widespread in the morning and again late in the day. On La Palma, La Gomera and Tenerife, the cloud base will sit below 1,100–1,200m; elsewhere it will be lower, around 850m.

Atlantic conditions

Out on the Atlantic, trade winds will strengthen as the day goes on, leaving a rough ocean by evening. There will be a one-metre ocean swell from the north and northeast, plus a similar swell with a southerly component affecting the east, south and west coasts of the larger islands.

Island by island

Tenerife

A sea of clouds will spill over the north below 1,100m. The rest of the island can expect sunshine, with highs of 31–32°C.

Gran Canaria

The familiar panza de burro cloud deck will cover the north up to roughly 850m. Elsewhere it will be sunny and hot, with temperatures reaching 34–35°C.

Lanzarote

Some low cloud will drift across the north and west of the island, especially during the early morning and again after mid-afternoon.

Fuerteventura

Plenty of sun and heat, with a few low clouds along the west coast in the morning and after mid-afternoon.

La Palma

Low cloud in the north and east. It will feel summery, but be ready for strong, possibly very strong, gusts in El Paso during the afternoon.

La Gomera

Cloudy skies over the north up to about 1,200m. Winds from the north could bring local gusts above 70 km/h.

El Hierro

Cloud below 850m in the north, clear skies elsewhere. The trade wind will bring locally very strong gusts to the far west of the island.

La Graciosa

A mixture of cloud and clear spells, with a moderate trade wind and a high of around 28°C.
