Netflix returns to the Canary Islands for its latest thriller
Netflix has once again chosen the Canary Islands as the primary backdrop for one of its most anticipated series. Oasis, the new production that premiered on the streaming platform on 19 June, showcases a wealth of locations across some of Tenerife’s most iconic spots. The young-adult thriller, created by Ramón Campos (Fariña, The Asunta Case), opens at a luxury resort designed as the perfect holiday escape – an environment of private beaches, endless parties and VIP services providing the ideal setting for a group of young people to enjoy the summer of their lives.
A disappearance at the Oasis Infinity resort
The plot takes a dark turn when Celia (Victoria Kantch), a member of staff at the resort, vanishes. Her body is discovered in the swimming pool, and police descend on the Oasis Infinity to investigate. From that point, a series of Agatha Christie-style mysteries begin to unravel, in which no one is entirely innocent. Most of the series was filmed across various locations in northern and southern Tenerife.
The iconic infinity pool at Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora
The most prominent location is the infinity pool at one of the island’s most exclusive resorts, the Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora, situated in Alcalá, in the municipality of Guía de Isora. This five-star hotel boasts a saltwater infinity pool considered the longest of its kind in Europe, along with sea views and a 2,000-square-metre spa. Producer Gema R. Neira told Guía Repsol magazine that the location was chosen because “it’s a beautiful place and it saves you having to travel around”. To reach the hotel, you first take the road from the airport. In Oasis, various shots of winding roads with sea views were actually filmed from a moving vehicle on the TF-12 (San Andrés-Anaga), TF-121 (San Andrés-Igueste) and TF-42 (Mirador del Guincho).
Beaches, cliffs and a historic harbour
The resort is not the only place where the production set up its tripods, clapperboards and cameras. A ten-minute walk from the Meliá lies the beach where the main characters swim: Playa La Jaquita, a collection of black-sand coves and natural pools in the same municipality. Garachico Harbour, which coincidentally was awarded a Blue Flag in May – becoming one of the first six ports in the Canary Islands to receive this distinction – also appears as a backdrop. The Acantilados de los Gigantes (Cliffs of the Giants), a jewel crowning the western tip of the island, also plays a starring role.
Action scenes in Arico and the Abona lighthouse
Netflix saved the island’s most striking locations for the final episodes. The Abades Leper Colony, already a legendary filming site in Tenerife, located in the municipality of Arico, features in the action sequences alongside the Punta de Abona Lighthouse, also known as the Faro del Porís.
Staying and dining at the Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora
A night at the iconic Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora costs around €300, depending on the date, room type and meal plan chosen. The minimum price starts at €230 per night for a standard double room in low season. Among the hotel’s culinary highlights is Le Bistrot Provençal, a restaurant awarded a Michelin star, which adds an extra layer of exclusivity and flavour to the series’ setting, showcasing the best of Mediterranean and local cuisine. Other dining options include the Pangea Food Market, where guests can sample international dishes and Canarian fare.
