Stable weather returns to the Canary Islands
Stable weather will return to the Canary Islands this Sunday, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). The day is set to be characterised by mostly clear or cloudless skies, although some cloudy intervals will persist in the north of the islands with the highest terrain during the early and late hours of the day.
Sunshine for Tenerife and Gran Canaria
In Tenerife, the sun will take centre stage for much of the day. Clouds will concentrate in the north below altitudes of 700 to 800 metres, while the rest of the island will enjoy largely clear skies, with a few cloudy intervals in the morning on the southern and western slopes. Temperatures will rise slightly, particularly in inland areas. Thermometers in Santa Cruz de Tenerife are expected to range between 20°C and 28°C, although locally higher values cannot be ruled out in some inland spots. The feel will be warm across much of the archipelago, and Aemet has not ruled out temperatures locally exceeding 30°C in the mid-altitude and inland areas facing south, west and east of Gran Canaria, as well as in parts of southern Fuerteventura.
In Gran Canaria, skies will be cloudy in the north during the morning but will tend to clear from midday onwards. Temperatures will rise slightly, and the heat will be more noticeable in the southern mid-altitude areas. Meanwhile, Lanzarote will record maximum temperatures of up to 28°C, while La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro will maintain stable conditions, with low cloud in the north and long sunny periods across the rest of their territories.
Winds picking up through the day
Another notable aspect of the day will be the wind. Although it will start light to moderate from the northeast, it will gain strength as the day progresses. In Tenerife, gusts may be occasionally strong on the eastern side and in the far northwest from the afternoon onwards. A similar situation will occur on other mountainous islands, especially on the slopes exposed to the trade winds. At sea, northeast winds of force 3 to 5 are expected, with slight to moderate seas across most of the archipelago. On the south, southwest and west coasts, breezes will prevail and the sea will be calmer, with smooth conditions.
The forecast paints a picture of a pleasant Sunday in the Canary Islands, with plenty of sunshine, temperatures rising slightly, and winds that will again bring some strong gusts during the second half of the day.
