Tuesday: steady trade winds and a mixed sky

Stable skies and a blustery Atlantic

Tuesday brings a return to classic spring conditions across the Canary Islands. The trade winds are blowing at moderate strength, with strong gusts expected on exposed slopes, particularly in the afternoon. Cloud cover will dominate the northern sides of the more mountainous islands, where a few light and patchy drizzle showers cannot be ruled out, especially during the early and late hours. Elsewhere, skies will be mostly clear or with only scattered clouds.

Temperatures and wind

Daytime highs will range between 21°C and 28°C across the archipelago, remaining fairly steady from Monday. However, the peaks of La Palma, Tenerife and Gran Canaria will see a slight drop. In the south, west and southeast of Gran Canaria, local temperatures could climb past 30°C in the mid-afternoon. Winds will be moderate from the northeast, picking up on exposed southeast and northwest-facing slopes. Strong gusts are expected, especially in the west and southeast of Gran Canaria and on La Gomera during the afternoon. Coastal areas in the southwest will see lighter ocean breezes.

Ocean conditions

The Atlantic will be rough, with strong swell on northern coasts and along the western shores of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, where waves could reach 2 metres. Winds over open waters will blow from the northeast at force 7 (50–61 km/h). More sheltered southern coasts will see choppy conditions but lighter swell.

Island-by-island breakdown

Tenerife

Cloudy skies in the north, breaking into brighter intervals around midday, although the northeast will stay cloudier with a low chance of the odd drizzle patch. The rest of the island will be mostly clear. Moderate trade winds, picking up in the southeast and around the Anaga massif during the afternoon. Temperatures in Santa Cruz will range from 19°C to 25°C.

Gran Canaria

The classic “panza de burro” (capped cloud layer) will linger on the northern and northeastern slopes below 1,000 metres, with a slight chance of localised drizzle. Elsewhere, mostly clear. Moderate trade winds, stronger in the southeast and west by the afternoon. Temperatures in Las Palmas will sit between 19°C and 23°C. Localised spots in the south and southeast may exceed 30°C.

Lanzarote

Scattered clouds across the interior, north and west, with mostly clear or partly cloudy skies elsewhere. Moderate trade winds, stronger inland. Temperatures in Arrecife will range from 19°C to 24°C.

Fuerteventura

Cloudy in the morning, clearing to mostly bright skies by midday before cloud returns at night. Moderate trade winds, picking up in the south of Jandía during the afternoon. Temperatures in the capital will hover between 19°C and 25°C.

La Palma

Cloud coverage on the north and eastern slopes below 900–1,100 metres, with some clear breaks at midday. The rest of the island will be mostly clear or partly cloudy. Moderate trade winds, accelerating on exposed edges. Maximum temperature in the capital will be around 24°C.

La Gomera

Mostly clear or partially cloudy, with cloudier conditions in the north where a light drizzle could occur. Moderate trade winds, with very strong gusts possible—over 70 km/h—in the northwest and in the capital. Daytime highs between 21°C and 27°C.

El Hierro

Cloud intervals on the northern and northeastern slopes below 900 metres. Elsewhere, mostly clear or with few clouds. Gentle trade winds and pleasant temperatures.

La Graciosa

Cloudy skies throughout the day. Moderate trade winds. Temperatures in Caleta de Sebo will range from 19°C to 24°C.

Worth noting

Keep an eye on those strong wind gusts in the west and southeast of Gran Canaria and on La Gomera later in the day. The ocean will be rough on northern and western shores, particularly around Fuerteventura and Lanzarote—not ideal for a calm dip, but good for the surfers looking for consistent waves.
