Record start to the year for cruise tourism in Arrecife
The Port of Arrecife in Lanzarote has welcomed a total of 394,086 passengers during the first four months of 2026, an 18.57% increase on the same period last year when 332,363 cruise visitors were recorded.
Mayor credits successful strategy
Mayor Yonathan de León (PP) highlighted in a statement that this strong momentum for the city as a cruise tourism destination shows that the actions taken during his term are bearing fruit. Specifically, he pointed to the achievement of making Lanzarote a homeport for shipping companies that schedule their cruises through Canary Islands waters as one of the reasons for this increase in passenger numbers.
Forecast of 700,000 passengers by year-end
The mayor added that forecasts from the Port Authority of Las Palmas indicate Arrecife will surpass 700,000 cruise passengers by the end of 2026. The council has also stressed that cruise tourism bolsters the local economy of the municipality, where many shops and hospitality businesses see their income rise during the cruise season.
Contrast with other European port cities
Meanwhile, other port tourism destinations such as Barcelona, Amsterdam, Venice, Palma de Mallorca and Vigo are introducing limits and conditions on this type of tourism to protect their cities and residents from the overcrowding and pollution caused by large cruise ship engines.
