New safety campaign for visitors to La Gomera
The Cabildo (island government) of La Gomera has launched a wide-ranging safety campaign aimed at tourists visiting the island. The initiative, presented on Friday 15th May, is designed to raise awareness of the specific risks associated with hiking on the island’s many trails, as well as along its coastal areas. The campaign includes the distribution of informative cards with emergency contact details, the creation of a dedicated website, and the installation of new signage at key points.
Emergency cards and digital resources
One of the cornerstones of the campaign is the “Emergency Card”, a practical resource that visitors can carry with them during their excursions. The card contains essential telephone numbers for emergencies (112), the Civil Guard, the Local Police, and the fire service. It also includes the exact coordinates of the island’s main health centres and hospitals, enabling visitors to quickly identify their location in case of an incident.
In addition to the physical cards, the Cabildo has launched a specific website (www.gomerasegura.com) and a mobile application. These digital platforms offer detailed information on hiking routes, safety recommendations, and direct access to emergency services. The website is available in several languages, including Spanish, English, and German, to cater to the island’s diverse visitor profile.
Focus on hiking and coastal safety
The campaign places a strong emphasis on hiking safety. La Gomera is crisscrossed by a network of ravines and mountain paths, including parts of the Garajonay National Park, which attract thousands of walkers each year. The new signage will indicate trail difficulty, estimated walking times, and the presence of mobile phone coverage. Visitors are reminded to wear suitable footwear, carry sufficient water, and check weather forecasts before setting out.
Coastal areas also receive specific attention. The campaign highlights the dangers of strong currents and unpredictable waves, particularly on the island’s less frequented beaches. The information cards and website include advice on safe swimming practices and the location of lifeguard services during the summer season.
Partnership with local businesses
The Cabildo is distributing the emergency cards through local accommodation providers, tourist information offices, and the island’s main ports of entry in San Sebastián de La Gomera. This collaborative approach ensures that the information reaches visitors directly upon arrival or during their stay. The initiative has been welcomed by hotel associations and excursion operators, who see it as a valuable tool to improve the overall visitor experience.
A safer experience for all
Casimiro Curbelo, the President of the Cabildo of La Gomera, stated during the presentation that the campaign is a fundamental step towards making the island a safer destination. He emphasised that La Gomera remains committed to sustainable and responsible tourism, and that providing clear, accessible safety information is key to achieving this goal. The campaign will be in place throughout the year, with updates as needed to reflect seasonal conditions.
