Blue tide descends on government HQ in San Marcos beach protest

Blue tide descends on government headquarters

The blue tide of the SOS San Marcos Beach citizen platform arrived at the main headquarters of the Canary Islands Government in Santa Cruz de Tenerife this Saturday. Protesters are demanding the unblocking of the cove in Icod de los Vinos, an emblematic stretch of coastline in the northwest of the island that has been waiting more than a decade for its rehabilitation project to be carried out.

Sand loss and years of frustration

The loss of sand is one of the main causes of the enclave’s degradation. After 12 years of campaigning and two demonstrations in the Ciudad del Drago, the community group decided to take the next step and take their complaint to the capital.

500-strong civic protest

The gathering, called by the platform, brought together around 500 people outside the regional government headquarters “because it is the body with the authority,” explained one of the spokespersons, Elena Fajardo Ocón. “The environmental impact assessment is blocked, and that depends on Costas [the Coastal Authority], which has delegated powers. We don’t know whether 100% or not, but clearly we had to go a step further and come to Santa Cruz because there is no sign of this being unblocked,” she added.

Dressed in blue, protesters could be heard from 11:30am in an atmosphere that was confrontational but civic. “Whoever governs, the beach must be defended” and “Few solutions, many authorities” were among the chants that rose from the throats of the attendees, who formed a diverse group: children, older people, young adults and teenagers all made it clear they can wait no longer for the rehabilitation of San Marcos Beach in Icod de los Vinos.
