Britain’s most wanted: 12 fugitives on the run in Spain
British authorities have set their sights on Spain, and particularly on areas with a large population of UK citizens such as Tenerife, the Canary Islands, the Costa del Sol and Alicante. The reason: to locate 12 of the UK’s most wanted criminals, suspected of hiding out on Spanish soil. The initiative is part of the well-known Operation Captura, launched on Thursday in Alicante by the Spanish Interior Ministry, the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the independent organisation Crimestoppers, in collaboration with Spain’s State Security Forces.
Tenerife among key locations in the search
Investigations suggest that some of these fugitives may have links to Spanish towns and cities with significant British communities, including several locations in the Canary Islands, particularly Tenerife. All those on the list are men, and they are linked to crimes considered of “special gravity”, including murder, drug trafficking, multi-million-pound fraud, sexual offences and money laundering. The campaign is now calling on the public to help track down these international fugitives, some of whom have been evading British justice for years.
The inclusion of the Canary Islands in the operation is no coincidence. British authorities believe that tourist areas with a high concentration of foreign residents can provide anonymity for internationally wanted individuals. In this context, Tenerife is named alongside Marbella, Malaga and Alicante as one of the possible hiding places for some of these criminals.
Police cooperation intensifies: 254 arrests since 2019
Police cooperation between Spain and the UK has intensified significantly in recent years. Since 2019 alone, Spanish security forces have arrested 254 British fugitives who were subject to international arrest warrants.
The fugitives: from cocaine kingpin to murder suspect
Among the names on the list is Simon Dutton, 49, accused of orchestrating major cocaine trafficking operations and money laundering. According to British authorities, one of the operations under investigation was worth £1.5 million. Another fugitive is Derek McGraw Ferguson, 62, wanted for a murder committed in Glasgow in 2007. Police believe he may be living under a false identity and has been among Scotland’s most wanted criminals for years.
The list also includes Kevin Thomas Parle, wanted for two murders in 2004 and 2005. Investigators believe he has links to southern Spain. Among those linked to drug trafficking is Matthew Purves, accused of being part of a large-scale cocaine supply network in the UK. There is also Alexsandr Kuksov, a 23-year-old Russian national linked to a criminal organisation allegedly involved in laundering millions of pounds from organised crime.
The list is completed by suspects linked to tax fraud, drug trafficking, sexual offences and money laundering, several of whom have previous connections to Spain or to tourist areas frequented by British citizens.
