Tenerife South Airport hantavirus warning sign a hoax, says Aena

Aena denies hantavirus sign at Tenerife South Airport

The Spanish airport operator, Aena, denied on Monday evening that a sign warning passengers about hantavirus had been installed at Tenerife South Airport. The airport was used by passengers who had been disembarked from the MV Hondius, the cruise ship affected by the illness, who then flew back to their home countries. “We confirm that no such sign has been installed at Tenerife South Airport. The image is a hoax,” Aena said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, accompanied by a photograph of the sign in question.

Passengers bussed directly to the runway

The Dutch-flagged MV Hondius was anchored off the port of Granadilla de Abona from 6am on Sunday until 7pm on Monday. Passengers of various nationalities were disembarked and then transferred by coach to the Tenerife airport. From there, around a dozen flights departed to their respective home countries. However, it is understood that the passengers were taken directly to the runway apron, without passing through the main airport terminal.
