New date for Tenerife’s flagship trail race
The Tenerife Bluetrail by UTMB has a confirmed date for its return. The island’s premier mountain race will take place from 8 to 10 April 2027, after this year’s event had to be called off due to the passage of the low-pressure system Therese. The fixture will mark its 15th edition with significant changes to the sporting programme and a clear aim to strengthen its position on the international trail running calendar.
New distances and a vertical challenge
The Cabildo of Tenerife has confirmed that the race will return with new categories and adjustments to some of the routes. Among the main new features is a 67-kilometre distance, whose route still needs to be finalised, along with an extension of the 73K race, which will grow by around ten kilometres. A new Vertical mode will also be introduced.
Priority entries for runners affected by cancellation
The organisation plans to open registration next June. The process will begin with a 48-hour priority window for athletes who were unable to start this year due to the cancellation and wish to take part in the 2027 edition. After that, entries will open for runners with a valid UTMB Index, followed by a third phase for other interested competitors. This system aims to accommodate those who already had places in the cancelled event, without closing the door to new participants.
‘Stronger and more prepared than ever’
The island’s Sports Minister, Yolanda Moliné, has said the race will return “with greater strength and a reinforced, responsible, and well-prepared structure”. She added that the introduction of new distances and the revision of routes respond to a desire to “evolve” and “offer a more complete, demanding, and attractive experience for all types of runner”.
Eleven modes and Running Stones on offer
In 2027, the Tenerife Bluetrail by UTMB will offer eleven modes and five race categories linked to the awarding of Running Stones. These are the credits that allow runners to enter the ballot for the HOKA UTMB Mont-Blanc in Chamonix, the grand finale of the UTMB Series circuit. The announced programme includes the Tenerife Bluetrail 110K, in the 100M category, awarding 4 Running Stones; the 83K, in the 100K category, awarding 3 Running Stones; the 67K, pending homologation; the 47K, with 2,600 metres of positive elevation gain and 2 Running Stones; and the 24K, with 1,300 metres of positive elevation gain and 1 Running Stone.
Coast to summit: A unique mountain challenge
The Tenerife Bluetrail by UTMB stands out for connecting the coast, mid-altitude areas, and high mountain terrain, with routes that reach the surroundings of Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain. The organisation describes it as one of the most varied mountain races due to the diversity of landscapes and its technical demands.
Environmental adaptation at the core of the 2027 edition
A key feature of the 2027 edition will be its adaptation to environmental regulations. The Cabildo stresses that the organisation will once again work to meet conservation requirements in protected natural areas, especially in Teide National Park. The modes that cross the park, the 110K and the 73K, will be limited to 400 runners each, in accordance with the Master Plan for Use and Management that has been in force since the end of 2025, according to information provided by the organisation.
