Yellow Warnings for Calima and Wind Across the Archipelago
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has maintained yellow weather warnings for Sunday due to an episode of calima, which will significantly reduce visibility across all the Canary Islands. The phenomenon will be accompanied by strong wind gusts, particularly in Tenerife.
Powerful Gusts Forecast for Tenerife’s Highlands
The wind warning will be active in Tenerife’s highlands and mid-altitude areas until the early hours of Monday morning. Maximum gusts of 70 kilometres per hour are forecast, affecting north-facing mid-altitude slopes, the dorsal ridge and, with particular intensity, the central peaks. In these summit areas, gusts could even exceed 100 km/h.
Widespread Reduction in Visibility
The calima will affect the entire archipelago. The influx of suspended dust has forced warnings to be issued for a reduction in visibility to 3,000 metres. Aemet’s forecast indicates that this calima episode will primarily affect the mid-altitude and high areas of the islands, though it is likely to eventually extend to lower zones as well.
Island-by-Island Alert Schedule
The warning schedules vary across the islands. In Gran Canaria and Tenerife, the calima alert came into force at midday on Saturday and will conclude at 9:00 PM on Sunday. It affects almost the entirety of these islands: the north, summits, east, south, and west slopes, and the metropolitan area of Tenerife.
In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the alert also started at 12:00 PM on Saturday, but in these eastern islands the episode will last a little longer, until the early hours of Monday. For La Gomera and El Hierro, the warning will be lifted at 6:00 PM on Sunday.
In La Palma, the alert was activated later (at 6:00 PM on Saturday) and will also remain in place until 6:00 PM on Sunday.
