Friday on the Islands: clouds, calima, and strong gusts
Friday (24 July) offers a mixed sky across the Canary Islands. Scattered clouds will linger over the lower northern areas of the mountainous islands and along the western coast of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, especially at the start and end of the day. Elsewhere, mostly clear skies will dominate. A light calima haze is drifting overhead, more noticeable over the eastern islands.
Temperatures will drop slightly inland but remain warm. The mercury could reach 34°C in the midlands of eastern and western Gran Canaria, and over 30°C in southern Fuerteventura, the southern midlands of the western islands, and western La Palma. The trade winds will be moderate, becoming strong in exposed low-lying areas and the interior of the more eastern islands. Very strong gusts — over 70 km/h — are likely, particularly in Gran Canaria and La Gomera. Out on the Atlantic, the northern coasts will see waves over 1.5 metres, with swell reaching more than 2 metres in the channels between islands, especially between Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
