Foreign Worker Social Security Affiliations Reach New Peak
The number of foreign nationals registered with Spain’s Social Security system increased by 5.3% in March compared to the same month last year, reaching a total of 140,956, the Ministry for Inclusion, Social Security and Migration reported on Wednesday. Compared to the previous month, the rise was 0.4%.
National Record and Key Contribution to Employment
Across the country, the average number of foreign contributors rose in March by 74,722 compared to February, an increase of 2.4%, setting a new historic record of 3,151,563 occupied workers. This group represented 14.4% of all contributors in March. Over the last year, the number of foreign contributors has grown by 230,358, an annual increase of 7.9%. Since March 2022, the number of foreign affiliates has added more than 852,000 workers.
In fact, 42.9% of all jobs created since the labour reform came into effect correspond to foreign workers, the Ministry highlighted. In seasonally adjusted terms, March closed with 3,210,759 foreign affiliates, which is 234,685 more contributors than a year earlier.
Minister Highlights Vital Role in Key Sectors
“The affiliation of foreign nationals continues to show extraordinary performance which impacts the whole. It is no coincidence that workers from other countries represent a significant 14.4% of contributors. Their contribution to our labour market is key,” said the Minister for Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz.
She added, “It sustains sectors like hospitality, where one in three workers is from another country, and drives entrepreneurship, as the number of self-employed foreign nationals now exceeds half a million.”
