Socialists Accuse Government of Hypocrisy Over Tourism
The Socialist Party (PSOE) in Lanzarote has denounced the island’s governing council, led by Oswaldo Betancort of the Canarian Coalition (CC), for allegedly planning the construction of two new tourist complexes. In a statement released this Sunday, the socialists revealed that the council’s latest governing committee approved the authorisation for the two new developments in Costa Teguise, which together would add 60 apartments and 120 tourist beds.
Details of the Approved Projects
The party detailed that provisional authorisation and classification has been granted to the entity Villas Blancas Lanzarote S.L. for a project comprising 27 apartments in Costa Teguise. This four-star, non-hotel tourist establishment, offering 54 beds, is slated for Calle Hervideros number 8 in the municipality of Teguise.
Furthermore, the socialists claim the island corporation is proposing a second project of 33 apartments, authorised to the entity Tagardina Inversiones S.L., which would provide 66 beds. This development is planned for Calle La Atalaya number 20, also within the same municipality.
“A Discourse of Limits That Only Exists in Propaganda”
For the socialist spokesperson on the council, Ariagona González, these agreements confirm that “Betancort’s discourse of limits exists no further than propaganda.” She stated, “While he talks about ‘not one more tourist, not one less,’ he continues authorising more tourist apartments. That is the reality.”
Warnings Amid a Severe Housing Crisis
González warned that these decisions are being made in a particularly grave context for the island, marked by an unprecedented housing crisis and uncontrolled growth of holiday lets. “Lanzarote already exceeds 11,000 holiday homes and has experienced an increase of over 100% in recent years, while thousands of families face serious difficulties in accessing housing,” she affirmed.
In this regard, the socialist spokesperson denounced that the current governing group “has not only failed to take measures to curb this situation but has voted against all proposals put forward to place limits on the model.” She emphasised, “They have voted against the eco-tax, they have rejected a tourism moratorium on repeated occasions, and they have not promoted a single measure to contain the growth. Not one.”
Consequence of a Sustained Policy
For the PSOE, what happened in the latest governing committee “is not an isolated incident, but the direct consequence of a policy that continues betting on increasing pressure on the island.” González concluded, “When a president promises one thing and systematically does the opposite, it is not a mistake. We are looking at a way of governing that no one believes anymore and which demonstrates that CC has renounced containing tourism.”
