Lanzarote is an island of volcanic contrasts — black lava meets white sand, and the surfer cliffs of Famara stand in stark contrast to the paradise coves of Papagayo. Beaches on Lanzarote are less crowded than those on Tenerife or Gran Canaria, yet every bit as spectacular.
Best Beaches of Lanzarote
- Papagayo Beaches — a cluster of 5-7 small coves in the Los Ajaches reserve. Golden sand, turquoise water, €3 car entry. The most beautiful beaches on Lanzarote.

- Playa de Famara — 6 km of surf beach below the Risco de Famara cliffs (600 m!). Surf schools, Caleta de Famara village. NOT safe for swimming — strong currents.

- Playa Blanca — a tourist resort with 3 beaches (Flamingo, Dorada, main). Calm water, gateway to Papagayo, ferry to Fuerteventura.

- Playa del Reducto — the main beach in the capital, Arrecife. White sand, a calm lagoon and a seafront promenade.

- Caletón Blanco — white sand on black lava near Órzola. Natural pools, shallow warm water, a spectacular colour contrast.

- Playa de la Cocina — a hidden beach beneath Montaña Amarilla (the Yellow Mountain). Volcanic colours, snorkelling, close to El Golfo.

- Charco del Palo — a naturist village. Rock pools carved into volcanic stone, no sandy beach, a unique way of life.

Surfing in Lanzarote
Playa de Famara is the best surf spot on Lanzarote — ideal conditions for beginners and intermediate surfers. La Santa (in the north) offers more powerful waves for experienced riders. In the south, La Garita is a favourite for bodyboarding.
