Playa de la Cocina is one of the most secluded and photogenic beaches on Lanzarote. It lies at the foot of Montaña Amarilla — a yellow volcanic cone with intensely vivid, almost unreal colours — right next to the village of El Golfo on the island’s south-west coast. This tiny cove of dark sand, ringed by cliffs in shades of ochre, gold and rust, looks like a scene from a science-fiction film.
Montaña Amarilla — The Yellow Mountain
Montaña Amarilla is a tuff cone with a strikingly intense yellow-orange hue. The colour comes from minerals ejected during an underwater eruption — sulphur, iron and other elements gave the rock shades you won’t find anywhere else on Lanzarote. The mountain is modest in size (around 50 m tall), but its colours against the black lava and blue ocean create one of the most iconic scenes on the island.
A short path circles the mountain (about 20 minutes), offering views of the beach, cliffs and open sea. It’s an excellent vantage point for photography — especially in the afternoon, when the sun picks out the warm tones of the rock.

The Beach — Small but Unforgettable
The beach itself is tiny — perhaps 50 metres long. The sand is dark, a mix of volcanic gravel and fine pebbles. The water is clear and excellent for snorkelling — underwater rocks covered in algae attract fish and other marine life. Currents can be stronger than the calm-looking cove suggests, so caution is advised.
Access is via a short descent from the car park at Montaña Amarilla. It’s not difficult, but it requires steady footing — the path runs over uneven rocks. There are no facilities on the beach — bring water, snacks and sun protection.
El Golfo and Charco de los Clicos
Playa de la Cocina sits right next to El Golfo — a fishing village famous for two things: the green lagoon of Charco de los Clicos (a vividly green lake inside a volcanic crater) and outstanding seafood restaurants. Combining a beach visit with lunch in El Golfo and a stroll to the green lagoon is one of the best ways to spend an afternoon on Lanzarote.
Practical Information
- Getting there: by car via the LZ-704 to El Golfo. Car park at Montaña Amarilla (about 500 m south of the village). The descent to the beach takes around 5 minutes.
- Public transport: no direct service. The nearest bus stop is in Yaiza (about 8 km).
- Facilities: none — no toilets or lifeguards. Nearest restaurants in El Golfo (10 minutes on foot).
- Snorkelling: worth bringing a mask and snorkel — the water is clear and the underwater life is rich by Lanzarote standards.
- Best time to visit: when the sea is calm (check the swell forecast). Afternoon sun shows Montaña Amarilla at its most dramatic.
