Best Beaches in La Palma — Black Sand and Natural Pools on the Green Island

La Palma is not a beach island — it is a hiking, volcanic, green island. But its beaches have something you will not find anywhere else: black sand from eruptions, natural lava pools and the most beautiful sunsets in the Canaries (western coast). The beaches are intimate, local and far from mass tourism.

Beaches and Natural Pools

  • Playa de Tazacorte — black sand on the western coast. Famous sunsets, a harbour with dolphin-watching trips and banana plantations as a backdrop.
  • Playa de Los Cancajos — La Palma’s main tourist beach. Black sand, natural pools, snorkelling, Blue Flag status. Close to Santa Cruz de La Palma.
  • Playa de Puerto Naos — the longest beach on La Palma. Note: following the 2021 volcanic eruption, gas emissions may still occur — check the current status before visiting!
  • Playa de Nogales — a wild beach on the northern coast. 100-metre cliffs, steep stairs, strong currents. Not safe for swimming, but the views are breathtaking.
  • Charco Azul — natural pools carved into volcanic rock. Crystal-clear, blue water. Ladders, free entry. Not a beach per se, but an icon of La Palma.
