Major Renovation Underway for Las Palmas’s Museo Néstor
The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has commenced long-awaited works to improve accessibility and modernise the Museo Néstor, following an eight-year closure. Led by the Councillor for Planning, Urban Development and Housing, Mauricio Roque, the project aims to consolidate the museum as a leading cultural and artistic landmark for the city.
Funding and Project Timeline
The ambitious renovation has a budget of €4,049,583.46 and is financed through the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN). The funding is split equally, with 50% contributed by the City Council and the remaining 50% jointly provided by the Canary Islands Government and the Cabildo (Island Council) of Gran Canaria. The construction company ASCH Infraestructuras y Servicios, S.A. has been appointed to carry out the works, which have an estimated completion period of 24 months.
Key Areas of Improvement
The project is structured around five key areas: safety and adaptation for people with reduced mobility, expansion towards La Caleta square, specific interventions, updating of facilities, and conservation and refurbishment works. Preliminary works have already begun, including fencing off the site and initial drilling for safety barriers.
Enhanced Accessibility and New Spaces
A primary focus is on making the museum fully accessible. Plans include constructing a new staircase-ramp at the Plaza de Las Palmas, installing internal ramps to access the decagonal room and east tower, and fitting a stairlift for the administration area. A new annex on the east façade will house a lift and service ducts, designed to blend with the building’s aesthetics. This extension will also feature an open-air platform on the ground floor suitable for exhibitions.
Internal Refurbishment and Restoration
Significant internal changes are planned. The decagonal room will be restored, former external toilets will be converted into a new exhibition space, and a ground-floor area will be adapted into an educational classroom. Following recommendations from the Cabildo’s Historical Heritage Service, the large window facing La Caleta square will be modified into a sufficiently large door to allow the entry of large-format artworks.
Comprehensive Building Conservation
The project includes a complete restoration of the building’s fabric. This involves repairing and sealing roof tiles, replacing the waterproofing system, and restoring the façades to their original white colour. Deteriorated wooden elements will be replaced with similar materials, and conservation work will be carried out on all interior and exterior joinery, locksmithing, and metalwork.
