50 Earthquakes Detected West of Teide National Park

Seismic Swarm Recorded Near Teide

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) detected a swarm of 50 small earthquakes west of Las Cañadas del Teide in Tenerife during the early hours of this Saturday. This activity follows a week of relative calm. According to sources speaking to EFE, 21 of these tremors were located with precision.

Details of the Tremors

None of the earthquakes were felt by the population. They were located at depths between 10 and 16 kilometres, with a maximum magnitude of 1.8 mbLg. The seismic events were accompanied by low-frequency signals, the sources confirmed.

Ongoing Volcanic Activity

This latest swarm confirms the continuation of seismic and volcanic activity on the island. The pattern involves earthquakes intermingled with low-frequency events. Crucially, the IGN has stated that this activity does not increase the risk of a volcanic eruption in the short or medium term.
