The relentless wind that has been buffeting the Canary Islands is finally backing off. Thursday, June 11, ushers in calmer conditions, with the trade winds slackening considerably and temperatures beginning to edge upward.
General conditions
The winds remain from the northeast, but significantly weaker than in recent days. Patchy morning cloud cover, lingering around 800 metres on the northern slopes of the mountainous islands and on the north and west coasts of the eastern ones, will quickly burn off to leave mostly clear skies, particularly over the southern coasts and mountain peaks. Temperatures will rise slightly, most notably in the mid-altitude areas of the larger islands. The Atlantic remains rough along northern coasts and in the channels between islands, with waves below 2 metres.
Island by island
Tenerife
Cloud cover is thinning out. A few scattered patches will linger in the north and around the Anaga mountains, but they lack punch. Expect temperatures between 19°C and 27°C in Santa Cruz.
Gran Canaria
The famous “panza de burro” (donkey’s belly) cloud layer will still be present in the north, but it will be thinner and less persistent. Elsewhere, expect sunshine and lighter winds. The capital should reach a pleasant 24°C.
Lanzarote
Early cloud in the north and west will clear quickly. The sun will dominate for most of the day, and the wind is easing off. Temperatures in Arrecife will range from 18°C to 26°C.
Fuerteventura
Low cloud in the northern half at dawn will vanish within a few hours. The wind is dropping, and thermometers will sit between 18°C and 26°C.
La Palma
Clouds are retreating from the north and eastern slopes. A few may cling to the coast early on, but they’ll soon retreat. The wind is losing strength, and temperatures are on the up.
La Gomera
Variable cloud cover in the north, particularly around Agulo in the early hours, will gradually shrink. The wind is calming down, especially at the exposed tips of the island, and temperatures are rising.
El Hierro
Scattered clouds will appear in the northeast. The wind is slackening, and temperatures will hover between 14°C and 19°C in Valverde.
La Graciosa
Expect low cloud in the morning that will tend to clear. The wind is on the decrease, and temperatures will climb a degree or two.
