Job market boom in Tenerife

Tenerife has become the second territory in Spain with the fastest-growing job opportunities, according to a report by LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional network. The study highlights that the island’s commitment to economic diversification is delivering results.

How the ranking works

Although the analysis focuses on metropolitan areas and large population centres, in the Canary Islands it takes Tenerife as its reference point. The island now sits second in the national ranking, behind only Alicante, and ahead of territories such as Zaragoza, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Vigo, Bilbao and Palma.

LinkedIn’s ranking does not simply measure the number of jobs created. It combines several indicators that reflect the strength of Tenerife’s labour market, including hiring growth, job demand, the ability to attract professionals, and the development of sectors with high potential for job creation. Under these criteria, Tenerife stands out as one of the Spanish territories with the greatest prospects for those seeking new professional opportunities.

Beyond tourism

One of the report’s most significant findings is that it debunks the idea that the island’s economy relies solely on tourism. LinkedIn stresses that employment growth is increasingly supported by activities linked to knowledge, innovation, digitalisation and professional services, consolidating a more diversified and resilient economic structure.

Among the sectors recording the strongest growth are higher education, business consultancy, technology services, engineering, research, and digital transformation activities. These fields are generating growing demand for skilled professionals.

Key employers driving change

The study also identifies some of the main employers contributing to this dynamism. These include the University of La Laguna (ULL), the Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC), and the multinational technology company Atos, considered one of the most significant contributors to the development of skilled employment on the island.

Atos is a prime example of the transformation taking place in Tenerife’s productive fabric. The company, which specialises in digital transformation, cybersecurity, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and advanced technology services, has been established on the island for exactly 25 years. It has turned its Santa Cruz hub into one of the group’s main technology centres. From its Global Delivery Centre, the multinational provides technology services to more than 120 clients worldwide and generates around a thousand highly skilled jobs. It also works on projects for public administrations such as the Canary Islands government, the Cabildo of Tenerife and numerous town councils, reinforcing the island’s role as a strategic hub for the digital economy.

Record employment figures

Macroeconomic data also helps explain Tenerife’s strong position. The island closed 2025 with a record 443,450 people in employment, while the unemployment rate fell to 12.6%, one of the best figures in recent years. At the same time, it welcomed 6.4 million foreign tourists, figures that confirm tourism remains the main economic activity, although the report emphasises that employment no longer depends solely on this sector.

Other areas of the economy are performing particularly well. Construction employment rose by 5.5% over the past year, industry grew by 3.1%, and activities linked to information technology continue to expand thanks to the arrival of new companies and the expansion of those already established.

Hybrid working on the rise

The report also analyses new ways of organising work. According to LinkedIn, 79% of job vacancies published for Tenerife are for hybrid roles, combining in-office and remote working. In contrast, only 0.2% of positions are fully remote, confirming that companies continue to favour flexible models but with a significant physical presence in the workplace.

Attracting and retaining talent

Another indicator the platform assessed is Tenerife’s ability to attract talent. The growth of technology companies, research centres, universities and advanced services is drawing skilled professionals from other regions, while also opening up new opportunities for young people educated on the island to build their careers without having to emigrate.

Political reaction

The president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, described the recognition as “confirmation” that the island’s economic diversification policies “are beginning to bear fruit”. In her view, Tenerife’s second-place position in the ranking shows that “the island is consolidating itself as an attractive territory for investment, entrepreneurship and the creation of quality employment”.

Similarly, the island’s councillor for Innovation, Research and Development, Juan José Martínez, noted that the study’s findings align with the strategy promoted by the Cabildo to strengthen knowledge-intensive sectors. Among the initiatives mentioned were the development of Tenerife’s Science and Technology Park, support for the University of La Laguna, industrial doctoral programmes, efforts to attract innovative companies, and projects aimed at retaining local talent in scientific institutions such as the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies in Granadilla de Abona (ITER).

The island has also improved its telecommunications links and boasts world-class computing systems, including the Teide and Anaga supercomputers installed at ITER. Martínez said the goal is for more and more young people to find professional opportunities on the island that match their training, so they do not have to leave Tenerife to build their careers.

A new direction for Tenerife’s economy

LinkedIn’s ranking confirms the shift taking place in Tenerife’s economy. Beyond the weight of tourism, the island is beginning to establish itself as a national benchmark in technology, innovation, research, consultancy and advanced services. These sectors are driving a more diversified, competitive labour market capable of generating skilled employment.

With this second-place finish in the national ranking of territories with the fastest-growing job opportunities, Tenerife reinforces its role as one of Spain’s main emerging employment hubs and consolidates a trajectory towards an increasingly innovative, knowledge-based economic model.
