Socialists raise alarm over Arrecife General Plan
The PSOE on Lanzarote warned this Sunday that the new Arrecife General Plan provides for the construction of 521 homes in the El Cable beach area, a project the socialists say could “radically deform the surroundings and compromise the natural heritage of the capital”.
‘Macro land grab’ claim over El Cable development
In a statement, PSOE councillor Cristina Duque described it as a “macro land grab” by the councillor for urban planning, Maciot Cabrera (CC), which “envisages putting more than 1,500 people into the area, with prices above 3,500 euros per square metre built”.
“We are facing a macro land grab that could bury El Cable beach under concrete and cement,” the socialist councillor said.
Pressure on infrastructure and calls to control growth
Duque highlighted that “the arrival of more than 1,500 residents would mean enormous pressure on existing infrastructure, from the sewers and roads to the water and electricity supply networks”.
She also argued that “Lanzarote needs to control its growth, protect its land and make access to housing easier”, rather than continuing to “fill land with buildings that most residents cannot afford and which then force our infrastructure to bear ever greater pressure”.
