Sunday: Saharan dust and gusty trade winds

Sunday: Saharan dust and gusty trade winds

Sunday across the Canary Islands will be mostly clear, though a light layer of Saharan dust (calima) will hang in the upper atmosphere. Trade winds will blow moderate to strong, with gusts on some islands, while temperatures climb towards summer highs.

General conditions

Skies are mostly clear across the archipelago. In lower areas on the northern slopes of the mountainous islands, and on the western sides of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, expect variable cloud cover early and late in the day. Temperatures remain fairly stable, but there will be hot spots. In the mid-elevations of southern and western Gran Canaria, and the southern half of Fuerteventura, thermometers could hit or even exceed 30–32°C. Localised 30°C highs are also possible on the other islands.

The trade wind will be moderate, with strong intervals on the southeast and northwest flanks, and in the southern interior of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Locally very strong gusts cannot be ruled out there. On the southwestern coasts of the mountainous islands, a light ocean breeze will prevail.

At sea, the wind will make conditions rougher. The largest waves will be found off northern and southeastern coasts, where the ocean swell could exceed 1.5 metres. On more sheltered southern shores, expect a rough ocean.
