Saramago Museum Celebrates 15 Years with Special Programme
The José Saramago House Museum is commemorating the 15th anniversary of its opening to the public this week with a special programme featuring choral music, cultural reflection, and new social and environmental activism initiatives. The events will be held in the house’s library in Tías and are open to the public until capacity is reached.
Choral Music and Institutional Opening
The celebrations will begin on Wednesday 18 March at 18:30 with an institutional event featuring an address by Pilar del Río, president of the José Saramago Foundation. During the gathering, the library will be filled with music courtesy of the Coral In Dulci Jubilo, directed by Marianne Whelpdale. This cosmopolitan choir, formed by singers from various European and Latin American countries and with over thirteen years of history on the island, will perform a repertoire of classical music including pieces by Tielman Susato and Henry Purcell, alongside traditional and contemporary works.
Literature and Feminist Thought in March
The programme continues on Friday 20 March at 19:00 with an encounter titled ‘An immersion through the sea of Begoña Caamaño, the blue of Circe and the sea of Lanzarote’. This talk will feature a conversation between Beatriz Caamaño, sister of Begoña Caamaño, and María del Río, director of the José Saramago House Museum. The activity is part of the museum’s March programme dedicated to feminist voices and perspectives in culture, aiming to highlight the contribution of female creators and thinkers to the literary and cultural sphere.
The dialogue will explore the narrative universe of the Galician writer and journalist Begoña Caamaño, the author to whom the ‘Día das Letras Galegas 2026’ is dedicated, and her work ‘Circe o el placer del azul’—a feminist interpretation of the classic myth of Ulysses and Penelope.
Launch of the GRREMM Project
The programme will culminate on Saturday 21 March at 18:00 with the presentation of the GRREMM project (Green, Renewable, Recyclable, Energy, Music Movement). This initiative proposes a new form of cultural, environmental, and social wellbeing activation. The project seeks to connect quality tourism, environmental education, local identity, and audiovisual experience, taking inspiration from the natural and cultural environment of Lanzarote, a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
This first meeting will be intimate and germinal, serving to present the conceptual lines of an initiative that aspires to contribute to the island’s cultural and sustainable prosperity. With this programme, the House Museum celebrates fifteen years as a meeting space for literature, thought, art, and citizenship, maintaining the legacy of Portuguese writer José Saramago.
