Puerto de la Cruz takes next step to revive historic Cine Chimisay

Puerto de la Cruz Town Hall has taken another significant step towards bringing the historic Cine Chimisay back to life. The iconic building in the old town is set to be transformed into a multifunctional municipal auditorium, and the council has now opened the bidding process for a mixed contract covering both the design of the project and the execution of the works.

€5.3 million investment for a modern, versatile space

The tender has a total budget of €5.3 million, and bids can be submitted until 6 July. The maximum timeframe for completing the entire project is 31 months. Once finished, the new facility is expected to accommodate up to 450 people, offering a modern and versatile space that can host a wide range of activities throughout the year.

Integrated design and construction approach

A key feature of this tender is the chosen formula: a mixed contract that integrates the design of the project and the actual construction work from the very start. In practice, this allows for more direct coordination between the technical solution and the building phase — an especially important factor when working on a historic property with specific structural conditions. The municipal area of Public Procurement and Heritage argues that “this approach makes it possible to tackle a particularly complex technical project in an orderly fashion, avoiding mismatches between the initial design and the needs that arise during the rehabilitation of existing buildings.”

More than a restoration: redefining a cultural landmark

The project promoted by the Town Hall “is not simply about restoring a building, but about redefining its use so that it can host different formats of activity,” the council explained in a statement. The aim is for the future space to support a stable cultural programme, including performing arts, cinema-related activities and educational initiatives, as well as institutional events and community gatherings. It will also be equipped for conferences, seminars and professional meetings, boosting Puerto de la Cruz’s ability to attract congress and business tourism — particularly during seasons when the cultural calendar helps keep the town centre vibrant.

Modern standards and urban revitalisation

At the same time, the council wants the new facility to incorporate solutions that meet current standards for public buildings and performance venues, with specific improvements in accessibility, energy efficiency, air conditioning, acoustics and stage equipment. This will ensure the hall can host a diverse programme with full technical guarantees. The goal is to establish a venue that strengthens cultural programming all year round while also helping to revitalise the historic centre, creating new opportunities for local shops, restaurants and the whole community.

From the Town Hall’s perspective, the recovery of the Cine Chimisay represents “an intervention that combines urban memory with contemporary needs, linking heritage, economic activity and culture.”
