Fire declared in Los Cazadores, Telde
The Cabildo de Gran Canaria has just announced via its social media channels that a forest fire has been declared in the Los Cazadores area, in the municipality of Telde. According to the island authority, the fire has “high potential”.
It is worth remembering that the island is currently under a yellow warning from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) for high temperatures, and under a pre-alert from the Government of the Canary Islands for the risk of forest fires.
Firefighting resources deployed as wind drives blaze
The Cabildo has also reported that its firefighting resources are already working in the area, and has called for maximum caution given the weather conditions. The fire, it explained, is being driven by a southerly wind and has high potential, due to the possibility of it reaching the bottom of the ravine and opening up routes towards the summit.
The settlements of Cazadores and La Solana are the closest to the blaze, it added.
Residents told to close doors and windows
Telde Council, which was alerted to the emergency at 12.52pm by the island coordination centre, Cecopin, has asked residents of nearby settlements (Cazadores, La Breña and higher areas) to close doors and windows if smoke drifts towards their homes.
It has also asked people not to travel towards Cazadores or the connected mountain roads (GC-130 / GC-120), so as to keep them clear exclusively for fire crews and security forces. In fact, shortly before 1.30pm it announced that traffic has been banned on both roads to facilitate the firefighting operation.
