Police Operation Halts String of Gran Canaria Shop Burglaries

Suspect Arrested After Crime Spree Across Three Municipalities

A joint operation between the Guardia Civil in Vecindario and Agüimes, alongside the Ingenio Local Police, has culminated in the arrest of a man suspected of committing multiple burglaries in the region. The criminal activity had been occurring systematically since mid-February 2026, primarily affecting the areas of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Agüimes, and Ingenio.

Targeted Businesses and Reckless Method

The suspect focused his activity on commercial establishments including beauty centres, mobile phone shops, computer stores, sports outlets, and leisure venues, as well as several vehicles parked on public roads. His modus operandi was recurrent and demonstrated an alarming criminal confidence. The perpetrator would smash shop windows or access doors by throwing large stones or heavy objects obtained from nearby areas. Once inside, he would quickly steal cash registers or valuable items.

Identification and Coordinated Police Chase

The identification of a distinctive tattoo, as well as the use of specific clothing, proved crucial in linking him conclusively to all reported incidents. Coordination between the Guardia Civil posts in Vecindario and Agüimes allowed for the cross-referencing of crucial operational data to trace the detainee’s criminal route. Collaboration with the Ingenio Local Police was also fundamental. Their officers, after receiving reports from the public about a suspicious individual breaking windows on a local street, initiated a coordinated search operation. This culminated in the interception of the aggressor following a chase near a ravine. The detainee attempted to avoid identification by throwing part of his clothing into the ravine, but the speed of the police action prevented him from succeeding.

Scale of the Damage and Financial Impact

In Vecindario, the detainee assaulted four leisure and commercial venues (two beauty centres, a sports shop, and a restaurant) and two vehicles, plus one attempted break-in, causing losses of around €5,360 in cash and goods. In Ingenio, within just 15 minutes, he attacked a butcher’s shop, a phone shop, and a computer store, focusing on structural damage and accessing payment terminals. Finally, in Agüimes, he stole a total of €950 after assaulting a sweet shop and a beauty centre, where a mobile terminal stolen previously in the neighbouring town was recovered. The total financial impact amounts to approximately €6,310 in cash and professional equipment, in addition to substantial damage to premises and furniture.

Restoring Calm to the Local Community

The arrest of this individual is of utmost importance for the region, as his activity represented a continuous trickle of criminal acts that had generated significant social alarm among local business owners and residents. It is particularly noteworthy that since his imprisonment, there has been a total cessation of crimes following this pattern in the affected towns, confirming the dangerous nature of his repeatedly reoffending behaviour and restoring calm to the commercial community.

The court proceedings, along with the detainee and the recovered items—including a mobile terminal stolen from one of the premises—were placed at the disposal of the on-duty court of the Telde judicial district, which ordered his immediate imprisonment. This type of crime has serious consequences that go beyond the mere individual financial harm to victims, as they create a climate of insecurity and unease in the community, damaging the stability of local commerce and social peace. The suspect’s repeated reoffending and absolute contempt for the rules of coexistence underscore the need for specialised police interventions to neutralise individuals who make criminal activity their way of life.
