Work begins on GC-1 motorway expansion in Gran Canaria
The Canary Islands Government’s Department of Public Works will begin work this October to expand capacity on the GC-1 motorway between La Estrella and Las Terrazas, in Gran Canaria, sources at the regional department have told EFE. The project, driven by the Directorate General of Road Infrastructure, involves improving accesses and junctions on one of the island’s busiest stretches of road and has a budget of €8.4 million, IGIC included.
Contract formalised after tender process
The contract to carry out the works has already been formalised following the tender process, the department said in a statement on Thursday. The Minister for Public Works, Housing and Mobility, Pablo Rodríguez, said the project fulfils a commitment made to Telde Council, the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and, above all, to the residents of the municipality and of La Pardilla, who have suffered the consequences of the temporary closure of this access point.
Fourth lane in both directions
Rodríguez explained that the works will be carried out with measures designed to minimise disruption to traffic on a road used by more than 160,000 vehicles a day. The project includes the addition of a fourth lane in both directions to increase the GC-1’s capacity and improve connections with the accesses at La Mareta, La Estrella, La Pardilla and Bocabarranco.
Targeting a congestion hotspot
The works will be carried out in the area between La Estrella and Las Terrazas, one of the points on the route with the highest traffic volumes and where recurring tailbacks occur. The intervention also includes improvements to the accesses and junctions along this stretch and sets out solutions to keep traffic moving while the works are under way. Among the planned actions are the construction and bringing into service of the southbound section and the restoration of access to the La Pardilla neighbourhood, one of the connections affected by the temporary closure of its access point.
